CIU Business School (CIUBS) at Chittagong Independent University (CIU) visions to become a “Center of Excellence” in business education and research in Asia. History:

CIUBS started its journey in 1999 under the then Independent University Bangladesh (IUB), Chattogram Campus. The erstwhile Chattogram Campus of IUB received its approval from the Ministry of Education and The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh as a full-fledged University on February 6, 2013, under the name of Chittagong Independent University (CIU). Since its inception, CIUBS has been continually evolving as a trusted partner of the community, industry, and other stakeholders in materializing their 21st-century roadmaps.

CIUBS has amassed a highly qualified team of faculty members, whose academic background and work experience span almost every continent of the globe showing its commitment towards the stakeholders. Our faculty members are highly dedicated and are selected based on academic excellence, research ability, and industry experience.

The majority of our faculty members are employed full-time having education and training from top institutions from home and abroad; We have faculty members with Ph.D. degrees in every major functional area of business education such as Accounting, Finance, Economics, Human Resource Management (HRM), General Management, Marketing;

National:

CIU is the first private university in Bangladesh, which has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Board of Revenue (NBR), Ministry of Finance, Bangladesh under which CIUBS is promoting transparency and accountability through Customs, VAT and Income tax education in the country.

CIU is the first private university in Chattogram to sign an MoU with the City Alo wing of The City Bank Limited under which CIUBS is offering a certificate program on women entrepreneurship in a novel effort to help women empowerment in the country.

International:

The CIUBS is on the continuous pursuit to establish collaborations with reputed international universities, professional bodies, and research institutions. Extra-Curricular Activities:

Opportunities for global learning occur 24/7 here at CIUBS both inside and outside the classroom. CIUBS has several student clubs, namely “Business Students’ Society (BSS)”, “CIU HRM Society”, “Independent Marketing Club”, “Intrinsic Finance Club”, CIU Accounting Club, etc., which organize round-the-year co-curricular events and help the students develop their skills and enhance practical knowledge.

Dean's Message

Welcome to CIU Business School!

CIU Business School (CIUBS) starts its journey from 2013 and within a short span of time, has established itself as the premier seat for business education and learning in the port city. It offers an updated and industry oriented curriculum for the business leaders of tomorrow, thereby contributing to the development and prosperity of the nation. The School is committed to ensuring excellence in teaching and research.

CIUBS has the highest number of Faculty Members with PhD degree in their relevant fields, as well as actively promotes the professional development of the Faculty Members who are on track to obtain higher degrees. The Faculty Members of this School are actively engaged in research, and have published numerous articles in national and international peer- reviewed journals.

It recognizes the needs to explore new areas of learning and updates its curriculum accordingly to best suit the changes. Keeping this in mind, the Department of International Business has been established recently, thereby recognizing the interconnected nature of modern business transactions. CIUBS is also exploring the feasibility of introducing new subject areas into its BBA and MBA curricula in near future.

The School maintains close links with the captains of industry and regularly hosts Guest Lecturers for a selected number of courses. It has already established academic and research collaborations with a number of industrial entities and academic institutions at home and abroad. CIUBS also holds a Corporate Talk Series, where visionaries from the corporate world share their insight and experience with the students.

Corporate Talk

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution or in the face of rapidly changing global scenario or to respond to the looming economic meltdown, the corporate houses continually look for the executives possessing leadership attributes, that can help them to put up with the pervasiveness of the changes.

The B-Schools around the world thus hone their curriculum to foster the intellectual nimbleness, social dexterity, learning agility, business acumen thereby to grow 360-degree leadership among their students. The academia-industry collaboration is believed to play a vital role in acquainting the students with the down-to-earth experience of the corporate world, as such, it is now highly emphasized and embedded in the academic programs of the advanced business schools.

The CIU Business School, with this end in view, has been organizing “The Corporate Talk”- a signature event of the School, since 2016. A large number of renowned industrialists and corporate leaders of the country have participated so far in the series as the keynote speakers. The event has gained widely the popularity and the applause from across the cohort learners, the stakeholders as well as the corporate houses of Bangladesh.

The 1st ever Corporate Talk was held on September 29, 2016 at CIU in association with Royal Cement Ltd., one of the leading cement producers of the country. Titled “CIU-Royal Cement Corporate Talk”, the episode was graced by eminent industrialist Mr. Aamier Alihussain, Managing Director of BSRM Group of Companies.

The succeeding episode of the series, titled “CIU-Royal Cement Corporate Talk”, was held on November 12, 2016, where the philanthropist industrialist and entrepreneur Sufi Mohamed Mizanur Rahman, Chairman of PHP Family was present as the key speaker.

The 3rd episode of the series titled “CIU-Royal Cement Corporate Talk”, was held on January 21, 2017 at CIU Auditorium. The Corporate Affairs Director of Nestle Bangladesh Ltd. , Mr. Naquib Khan, remained present as the key speaker and put his voice.

The 4th episode of the series was graced by Mr. Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, Managing Director, and CEO of Robi Axiata Ltd.- the Robi's first homegrown CEO. Titling “CIU-Robi Axiata Ltd. Corporate Talk”, the episode was held on March 8, 2017.

The 5th round of the series was held on July 5, 2017 under the auspices of CIU Intrinsic Finance Club- a student oriented club under Dept. of Finance and Economics of CIU Business School. Rotary Club of Chittagong Mid City was the strategic partner in this episode. However, it was addressed by Mr. Kayesh Chowdhury, Executive Vice President, Area Head of Chittagong- Corporate, The City Bank Limited as the keynote speaker while Professor Shahedur Rahman, Dept. of Accounting, Finance and MIS, Praireview A&M University. USA was present as the Special Guest in it.

The 6th episode of the Corporate Talk series was held on September 18, 2018 at CIU Auditorium. It was graced by one of the leading entrepreneurs of the country, Mr. Nader Khan, Managing Director, Pedrollo NK Limited, as well as Hon’ble CIU Trustee, as the keynote speaker.

The 7th Corporate Talk was held on March 5, 2019 addressed by Mr. Syed Mohammed Tanvir, Director, Pacific Jeans Group as well as a promising young entrepreneur of Ready-made Garment (RMG) sector.

The 8th Corporate Talk titled “Voice of an Insurer” was held on October 16, 2019, attended by Ms. Farzanah Chowdhury, Chartered Insurer, and Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Green Delta Insurance Company Limited, as the keynote speaker in it.

The 9th Corporate Talk titled "Voice of a Corporate Magician" was held on June 26, 2022 at CIU Auditorium. It was graced by Mr. Mominul Islam, MD & CEO of IPDC Finance Ltd. as the key speaker. Amongst others, Mr. Rizwan Dawood Shams, AMD of IPDC, Anirban Sarkar, Cluster Head & Branch Manager of IPDC Finance, and a large number of business school students were also present.

The 10th Corporate Talk, organised by CIU Business School, was held on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at CIU Auditorium. It was graced by Mr. Zahir Uddin Ahmed, Managing Director, Confidence Cement Limited, as the key speaker. A large number of students, faculty members, and management staff took part in the event.

Connecting With C-Suite

“C-suite” encapsulates the upper echelons within a company who are responsible for making corporate decisions, managing overall operations and setting the company’s strategic direction. Hence, it is imperative that the students of business school are acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the chief officers in an organizational set-up. With this end in view, CIU Business School at CIU has initiated a series titled “Connecting with C-Suite”, where the C-level executives of different sectors are invited to share their momentous thoughts and experience, which we believe would be greatly beneficial for our students.

Organized by CIU Business School, the 1st episode of "Connecting with C-Suite" series was held on February 6, 2023, at CIU Auditorium.
Nagad's Chief Business Officer Mr. Sheikh Aminur Rahman delivered a talk on "Fintech-the Future Money System and Unlocking the Door of Fintech Career" in this session. In the event, CIUBS Dean Prof. Dr. Syed Manzur Quader gave the opening remarks while Prof. Dr. MM Nurul Absar, Head of HRM Dept. passed the concluding remarks. It was attended by a large number of participants including business students, faculty members, management staff, and the sales team of the Nagad Ltd.

The 2nd episode of the "Connecting with C-Suite" series was held on June 18, 2023 at CIU Auditorium. Mr. Tanvir Shahriar Rimon, CEO of Rancon Real Estate & Sea Fishing Division, delivered a talk on "Driving Changes on the Top: How CEOs foster Environmental Sustainability".
It was moderated by Prof. Dr. Syed Manzur Quader, Dean, CIU Business School. A large number of participants including faculty members, management staff, and students attended the event.

Industry Tour:

CIU Business School has been endeavoring to develop ethical, innovative, and responsible leaders in all functional areas of business. The students should be fully able to understand the core business concepts and principles in order to implement the same in reality. And these goals cannot be achieved until the students are spending moments in an industrial setting. Keeping With this view in mind, the business students are sent to the offices or factories of different enterprises in every academic session, where they gain firsthand knowledge. about various operational and management practices of the same.

Live-in-Field Experience (LFE):

The LFE is a unique course offered by CIU under which the students gain firsthand knowledge about the society, industry and economy as a whole of Bangladesh. All the students studying at CIU have to participate in a mandatory three credit course called Live-in-Field Experience (LFE). The idea is to impress the young minds with the socio-economic realities of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

It is imperative that the future leaders of our society must know how the great majority of our people live and earn; how the industries operate, create employment opportunities and add value. These will make them think of ways to solve the problems and thereby open up opportunities for further social and economic development.

Venue:

The summer LFE normally takes place at Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development” (BARD), Kotbari, Cumilla, and the winter LFE is held at FIVDB, Khadimnagar, Sylhet. The program is managed and conducted by a group of Faculty Members who individually have more than 10 years of experience with the course.

We are committed to providing our students with the tools they need to excel in their careers. As part of the BBA program, the final-year students, especially the internship students, need to opt in a course titled “Employability Skills”. Initiated by CIU Business School, this is a unique and practical course crafted to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills ensuring our students are well-prepared for the challenges they may face during their transition from academia to their professional careers.

CIUBS Research Seminar:

CIU Business School has initiated a new series titled "CIUBS Research Seminar" with the objectives of promoting scholarly works, and encouraging young researchers to delve into the new propositions. In the academic realm, it is said that "Either you publish or perish''. The very objective of a university lies in advancement of knowledge alongside the dissemination, and preservation of knowledge. Hence, it is crucial that the university takes proper steps to put in place a research culture from within whereof the faculty members may feel self-motivated to engross themselves in research and publications.

The maiden episode of the series was held on August 13, 2023, where Dr. Emon Kalyan Chowdhury, Associate Professor at CIUBS, set forth his new paper titled "Fueling Economic Growth: Unleashing the Power of Entrepreneurship in South Asia with Technological Innovation, Financial Development, and Institutional Quality". The presentation stirred the attendees with great thrill and enthusiasm. A detailed discussion was held over the paper and it was concluded by a resourceful Q/A session in the end.

The 2nd episode of CIUBS research seminar was held on November 7, 2023, at classroom # 3402 in the business school building. It was attended by the noted researcher & professor of business school, Dr. MM Nurul Absar as the key speaker. Dr. Absar shared the story of his research journey, and put up a resourceful presentation on effective teaching-case writing method. He stressed on developing indigenous and impactful business cases for the students rather depending on foreign cases.

The 3rd episode of CIUBS research seminar was held on March 10, 2024 at Classroom # 3411 in the business school building. It was conducted by Lecturer Ms. Umme Humaira on her recently published research article in Economic Affairs titled “Russia-Ukraine Conflict and Investor Psychology in Financial Markets”. The paper was co-authored by Professor Dr. Emon Kalyan Chowdhury. Following the presentation, a valuable discussion was held over various models used in modern research.

The 4th research seminar of CIU Business School was held on August 29, 2024 at Classroom # 3402 in the business building. It was attended by Ms. Iffat Ishrat Khan, Lecturer, CIUBS, as a resource person. Titling " Evaluation of Sustainable Business Practices in the Subsidiaries of Multinational Enterprises of Bangladesh", Ms. Khan delineated the rationales and objectives behind opting in such research topic, and defended her arguments by replying to a number of questions raised by the attendees.

The 5th research seminar of CIU Business School was held on November 5, 2024 at Classroom - 3402 in CIUBS Building. Titled "Convergence and Divergence between Corporate Research and Academic Research", it was conducted by the renowned Professor of Accounting and Advisor of CIUBS, Dr. M. Ayub Islam. Drawing the line between corporate and academic research, Prof. Islam argued that a student must go through the proper training in his undergrad program for becoming a Corporate Researcher whereas one must opt for MPhil or PhD degree aspiring to be an Academic Researcher. This thought-provoking seminar was attended by the faculty members of CIUBS and concluded with a Q/A session.
